The honest answer

Why does it
cost what
it costs?

It's the question we get asked most, so here's the straight answer: what you're paying for, what you get, and why so many people who buy one come back for another.

Where the money goes

Six things you're
actually paying for.

No marketing fluff. These are the reasons an Iron Gate piece costs more than the one in your drawer, and why it's worth it.

  1. Macro of a damascus steel pattern with the Iron Gate maker's mark stamped near the handle
    01

    Proper steel

N690, 52100, M390 and Damascus. Steels chosen to take a fine edge and keep it, named on every listing. Not mystery metal.

  2. A batch of unfinished blades wrapped in tape, lined up on a workshop bench among tools
    02

    Heat treated properly

Steel is only as good as its heat treatment. Ours is done properly so the edge holds up to years of real cooking.

  3. Close-up of a handle made from swirling burl and dark timber with brass pins
    03

    Real handle materials

Aussie timbers, antler, abalone and TruStone. Natural materials, so no two handles are quite the same.

  4. Hands sanding a handle on a small sanding wheel in a dim workshop
    04

    Hand finished in Anna Bay

Shaped, sanded and finished by a small team of makers in Anna Bay, NSW. Makers paid properly, in an Australian workshop.

  5. A hand holds a blade spine-up to show engraved lettering along the top
    05

    Your name on it

Free engraving on every piece. A name, a date, a few words. It's what turns a tool into an heirloom.

  6. Hands running a pull-through sharpener on a timber workbench

Straight answers

Still on the fence?

Is it actually made in Australia?

Yes. Iron Gate is Australian made by a small team of makers in Anna Bay, NSW. You're welcome to come and see for yourself: the showroom at 4236 Nelson Bay Road is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

How does the lifetime guarantee work?

Every piece we make is backed for life. Send it back whenever it needs a sharpen, a repair, a reshape, a tighten or a clean and we'll sort it, free. You just cover the postage to us.

No receipt needed and no limit on how many times. If it's one of ours, it's covered, even if it was a gift. Email workshop@irongateknives.com and we'll tell you how to send it in.

Why is there a wait on some pieces?

Pieces marked made to order are built for your order and take about 3 to 4 weeks. Pieces marked in stock ship straight away. Every listing tells you which it is before you buy.

How does the free engraving work?

Add your words on the product page before you check out: a name, a date or a short line. It's free on every piece.

Chopping boards carry the Iron Gate mark rather than a custom engraving.

How do I look after it?

Hand wash it, dry it, and never put it in the dishwasher. Give the handle and steel a wipe of our knife and handle wax now and then. When it needs an edge, a quick touch-up on a sharpener keeps it going, or send it back to us for a full sharpen, free.

What does delivery cost?

Tracked AusPost delivery. The exact cost shows at checkout before you pay, so there are no surprises.
